Access and reuse
Galapagensis brings together original research and documentary materials preserved across institutions, collections and communities. These materials have different creators, custodians and rights holders, and their conditions of access and reuse vary.
This page explains how to cite Galapagensis, acknowledge the sources it uses, and determine whether permission is needed to reproduce, adapt, translate or redistribute particular materials. Rights and licence notices attached to individual items provide the conditions applicable to those items.
Describing, linking to or reproducing a source does not imply ownership of the original or its digital representation. Public availability alone does not establish permission for reuse.
Original Galapagensis work
Authored texts, research outputs, translations, images and downloadable publications must be used according to their individual rights and licence notices. A licence on one publication does not automatically apply to the rest of the website or to the sources discussed within it.
Where no reuse licence is stated, do not assume permission to reproduce or adapt protected content. Contact Galapagensis for uses requiring authorization. Applicable copyright exceptions and limitations remain available.
Historical sources and third-party material
Photographs, maps, manuscripts, published texts, recordings, specimens and other sources retain their own rights and access conditions. Follow the notice attached to each item and, where relevant, the holding repository’s instructions. Credit the creator and repository as indicated; consult the rights holder when permission is required.
A source may be in the public domain while a related reproduction or other associated material has separate conditions. Galapagensis does not grant rights it does not hold. A missing or uncertain rights statement is not a declaration of public-domain status.
Contributions, voices and consent
Sharing a photograph, document, identification or testimony with Galapagensis does not automatically authorize publication or transfer copyright. Credit, permitted uses, access conditions and any agreed restrictions should be established before publication.
Oral histories, family material and information about living people require attention to consent, privacy and the conditions under which they were shared. Recordings, transcripts and translations may have different access permissions. Publication does not authorize every subsequent use.
Citation and acknowledgement
Cite the author, title, publication date, version where relevant, and DOI or stable URL. For evolving website pages, include the access date and any stated update date. Preserve credits and licence notices when sharing material.
When using a historical source located through Galapagensis, cite the underlying source and its repository identifier as well as any Galapagensis interpretation on which your work relies. Attribution does not replace permission where permission is required.
Permissions, corrections and concerns
For permission requests, identify the item, your intended use, whether it involves adaptation or translation, and its publication context. For a rights or privacy concern, include the page URL and the material concerned so that it can be reviewed.
